Poverty in the rural areas of Burkina Faso is severe. More than 90 % of the population relies on selfsufficient agriculture to make a living. However, the climatic conditions make it difficult for them to keep agricultural output on a sustainable level. New opportunities are needed, in order to open up additional income sources of income to farmers and to ameliorate their living situation.
In 1999, a group of highly dedicated Burkinabe started the organization Wend-Puiré with the objective to promote honey production in Burkina Faso, train beekeepers, and provide farmers with a platform to market their honey. Today, Wend-Puiré is the largest honey producer in West Africa and produces around 60 tons of honey a year.
